Attention Society Members! Our Society Archivist, Nick Fry, hosts a series of Archives work days or work sessions on the 3rd Saturday and Sunday of each month from 9 AM to whatever time attendees decide to stop. The Society Archives are located in Arbutus, Maryland. Spend a whole day or just a few hours. It is also a good opportunity to meet Society members and a few of the officers who frequently drop by during the day. Nick conducts these 2-day sessions throughout the year except during the month of December. Check out the Archives Working Session link below for some photos taken during a typical work session. As you can see by some of the photos, there is still many, many boxes of old B&O materials to go through. Just think of the treasure you might discover. If you are interested in joining us for a day or two of sorting, cataloging or just looking through the Society's large collection of original B&O papers, documents, and blueprints, to work on some research you may be interested in, please send an email to him at Archivist. Thanks go to all of you who work with Nick each month.
Model Train Show! The Society has three or four large sales tables at the Great Scale Model Train Show held throughout the year at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Maryland. The shows that we participate in are held in February and October of each year. We also participate in the April show from time to time. If you are interested in helping with show sales, or are just interested in knowing if the Society will be participating in a particular show, send the Store Manager an email. For further information about the show, check out the show web site at GSMTS.
The Society 2010 Annual Convention will be held in Baltimore, Maryland, October 21 through 24, 2010. The event will be a joint convention with members of the Chessie System Historical Society and the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. We have also set up a convention blog to provide information on the convention. Go to the Blog. We have a flyer for our Baltimore convention that you can print out for review. The convention site will be at the Holiday Inn, just two miles from the BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport
Eastern Mini-Con. Each year during late summer, the eastern contingent of the Society holds a mini-con featuring guest speakers and Company Store sales. More information will be provided on this web site as plans are firmed
Western Mini-Con. Each year during May, the western contingent of the Society holds a mini-con in Ohio. The 2011 Western Mini-Conference will be held May 14, 2011, in Ravenna, Ohio. The mini-con will feature guest speakers on topics of interest to B&O enthusiast as well as merchandise sales. We have a preliminary copy of the flyer with conference details for you to look at. For questions about future conferences, contact the conference coordinator at Ohiominicon
Non-Members
You "should" be a member to enjoy our one-day mini-conferences but you "must" be a member to attend our annual conventions held early October each year. As seating is limited at mini-conference sites, members get priority over non-menbers. Please consider joining our Society.
It only takes $35 per year to be a member, and in return you get significant value. Benefits include invitations to our all conventions, plus you receive 4 issues per year of The Sentinel, delivered to your mailbox. Also you get opportunities to purchase new models, books and video’s related to the B&O as soon as they hit the market, at discount from list prices. Our “Company Store” on this website has about the widest selection anywhere of serious B&O items for historians, modelers or B&O fans. If you are a modeler, our Reprints contain information needed to accurately depict a B&O scenario, in many cases right down to a particular year.
Our annual conventions are not huge affairs where you’ll be lost in the shuffle. They are typically a gathering of 75-100 friendly folks where great sharing of B&O history and modeling takes place. Annual conventions feature bus tours of local B&O interest, and where possible, tours of railroad facilities or industries served by the railroad. Don’t miss the fellowship with a great bunch of people. Click to the Membership page and sign up.
