Monthly Archives Work Sessions: ~Disregard these comments during the COVID restrictions.~ Our Society Archives hosts a series of Archives work days or work sessions on the 3rd Saturday of each month from 9 AM to whatever time attendees decide to stop. Some months the session is held on the 2nd Saturday, as when a holiday interferes with the 3rd weekend. Also, there usually is no session in December. The Society Archives is located in the Society's Building at Eldersburg, Maryland. See our Contacts link for the actual address and a map of the area. Spend a whole day or just a few hours. It is also a good opportunity to meet Society members and a few of the officers who frequently drop by during the day. If you are interested in joining us for a day of sorting, cataloging, or just looking through the Society's large collection of original B&O papers, documents, and blueprints, or to work on some research you may be interested in, please send an email to our Archives group at Archives. Thanks go to all of you who work with our Archives group each month.
The 2022 Founder's Day Dinner usually held in early March at the Society's headquarters building in Eldersburg MD, has not been scheduled. This event would commemorate the February 28, 1827 issuance of the charter for the B&O Railroad. A volunteer is needed to plan for this event.
The 2021 Society Annual Convention and Business Meeting will be held from September 30 to October 3 in the Akron area. This is a member only event. A flyer is included in the Third Quarter Sentinel with all the official information for registration and lodging. There are speakers, a Friday bus tour, a Saturday banquet, and the annual business meeting on Sunday morning. COVID requirements will be observed. Vaccination is not being required.
Western Mini-Con. Each year during May, the western contingent of the Society holds a mini-con in Ohio featuring guest speakers and Company Store sales. Except 2020 AND 2021. In 2022 the event is scheduled to be held on Saturday, May 14, at the Century Village Museum in Burton Ohio. The flyer will be included with the Second Quarter Sentinel. Questions may be directed to the Western Mini-Con coordinator at Ohiominicon.
Eastern Mini-Con. Each year during the summer, the eastern contingent of the Society has held a mini-con featuring guest speakers and Company Store sales. The format of the 2021 mini-con held at the BORHS HQ Building in Eldersburg MD, on July 24, was a combination of on-site and virtual by Zoom. There was no fee for this program. For further questions, please contact Eastminicon.
Timonium Model Train Show. The Society usually has several sales tables at the Great Scale Model Train Show held three times each year at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium MD. We participate only in the October show which is now scheduled for the first weekend of the month. This year, the Society's Annual Convention is on the same weekend, thus the Society will not be represented. For future events, if you are interested in helping with show sales or are just interested in knowing about the Society's activity at the show, send an email to the Store Manager. For further information about the show, check out the show web site at GSMTS.
Eldersburg Flea Market/Train Show and Silent Auction. The Society has scheduled this event at the Society's Eldersburg building for November 20, 2021, starting at 9:30. This event is NOT for dealers, individuals only. Cost for a table is $15 each, maximum of 2. Registration for table(s) is on the reverse side of the flyer.
You "should" be a member to enjoy our one-day mini-conferences but you "must" be a member to attend our annual conventions held in September or October each year. As seating is limited at mini-conference sites, members get priority over non-members. Please consider joining our Society.
It only takes $45 per year to be a member, and in return you get significant value. Benefits include invitations to our all conventions, plus you receive 4 issues per year of The Sentinel, delivered to your mailbox or available as a downloaded PDF. Also you get opportunities to purchase new models, books and video’s related to the B&O as soon as they hit the market, at discount from list prices. Our “Company Store” on this website has about the widest selection anywhere of serious B&O items for historians, modelers or B&O fans. If you are a modeler, our Reprints contain information needed to accurately depict a B&O scenario, in many cases right down to a particular year.
Our annual conventions are not huge affairs where you'll be lost in the shuffle. They are typically a gathering of 75-100 friendly folks where great sharing of B&O history and modeling takes place. Annual Conventions feature a bus tour of local B&O interest, and where possible, tours of railroad facilities or industries served by the railroad. Don't miss the fellowship with a great bunch of people. Click to the Membership page and sign up.
